For those fluent in French, Hublot’s name comes from the French word meaning “porthole”. And when, in 1976 Carlo Crocco left the Italian Binda Group, best known for making Breil watches, to make his own watch company, it was in hopes that this “porthole” would show him a calm sea and a brighter future. And Hublot Watches for Men would certainly take him there.
The watch that he created featured the first natural rubber strap the watchmaking world had seen. It took 3 years of research to create the strap and this mix was later called the “Fusion” concept, which in honor of the name had fused a Porthole shaped case with the innovative rubber strap.
Interestingly enough, when the watch was unveiled in the 1980 Basel Watch Fair it failed to attract a single customer. What’s interesting about it is this did not discourage Hublot Watches, and that year they closed with sales of Hublot Watches for Men in excess of $2m.

For years Hublot continued to innovate, and Carlo Crocco soon found that he needed someone to take over as acting CEO of the company, since he had become very invested in charitable work, including the Hand-in-Hand Foundation, a charity helping deprived children all around the world. So In the last months of 2003 he met with Jean Claude Biver, who had worked for Swatch Group’s Omega division.
In 2004 Biver became the acting CEO for Hublot, and invited his friend Ricardo Guadalupe to work with him And then…the awards started to roll in.
Unveiled in Basel in April 2005,the Big Bang chronograph was designed, created and awarded internationally. In November of that year it received the "2005 Design Prize" in the "Geneva Watchmaking Grand Prix", the "Sports Watch Prize" at the "Watch of the Year" ceremony in Japan, and the Middle Eastern Prize for the "Best Oversized Watch" at the Editor’s Choice "Watch of the Year" in Bahrain. With the design and creation of the Big Bang model for Hublot, Mr. Biver tripled the orders Hublot Watches for Men had in one year.
In time, Hublot has sponsored some of the top Football teams in Europe, like Manchester United, FC Bayern Munich, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain and Ajax Amsterdam. In 2008 the company was acquired for an undisclosed amount by the LVMH group, making Hublot Watches for Men the premier choice when it comes to classy and stylish timepieces.
