Weird Gifts Given by Other Countries
In the history of the United States, there have been many instances where strained relations with other countries made way for some very memorable gift exchanges made as a sort of peace offering. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. To clarify, it is customary to present a gift to another country when sending a representative to speak about certain issues and the US has been the recipient of some very Weird Gifts over the years.
In the spirit of such occurrences, today we shall look at some of the very best examples of Weird Gifts given to and by The United States to other countries as a way to break the ice or elicit laugher. Don’t be surprised to find Russia more than on the list. Let’s begin!
John Kerry(USA) gives Sergei Lavrov( Russia) Potatoes
Mr Kerry said that Mr Lavrov had mentioned Idaho state's most famous export the last time the pair met. The Russian foreign minister seemed to appreciate the gift, commenting that they were "impressive. "The two men are in France to negotiate details of a peace conference on Syria scheduled for 22 January. Mr Lavrov, speaking in English, suggested the potatoes may have symbolic use as the Syria negotiations approach. “The specific potato which John handed to me has the shape which makes it possible to insert potato in the carrot-and-stick expression. So it could be used differently,”
George Bush receives Komodo dragon from Indonesia
In 1990 George H. W. Bush received from the Indonesian government a Komodo dragon as a more than Weird Gift , and it was actually the largest dragon in the western hemisphere at that time. Despite the historical importance of the dragon, Bush was unable to keep the gift and he donated it to the Cincinnati Zoo. While at the zoo, the nine-foot dragon grew to over 300 pounds and produced over 30 offspring, which were donated to zoos around the country. In Indonesia, dragons are considered a national treasure for their ability to take down prey twice their size, including deer and water buffalo.
Obama receives Crocodile Insurance from Australian official
On a visit to Australia’s Northern Territory in November 2011, the territory’s Chief Minister, Paul Henderson, gave away an insurance policy worth $50,000 to the Obama family during his stay, just in case the Secret Service dozed off while on duty. With the region being famous for having the most Crocs throughout Australia, you can’t blame Henderson for trying to be safe rather than sorry. Obama gleefully accepted this Weird Gift.
